- INKTOBER 2022 -

In 2022, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to fully complete the Inktober challenge. This challenge involves creating a drawing every day for the entire month of October. The original concept was to draw only with ink, however as years passed, artists have tailored the challenge to something unique depending on their own needs and ideas. Nowadays, you can find many variations of the Inktober challenge with different mediums and prompt lists.

I have approached the challenge with the desire to kickstart my journey into the digital world. Up to this challenge, I have never used a digital software to create artworks from scratch. Given the limited time for each artwork, I knew that I had to have ideas and sketches done in advance. With that in mind, I haven chosen Adobe Photoshop as my main medium and limited myself to only one or two types of brush.

PROMPT LIST

The first ideas for this challenge were to create artworks for all five generations of the PlayStation consoles and the PlayStation Portable. After deciding on those ideas, I continued with the nostalgia and retro theme adding more gadgets to the prompt list.

All of the prompts were chosen based on childhood memories and the fond feelings that are connected with them. Tried to remain as close as possible to the gadget theme, however I have also added a few other objects that are still in the nostalgic realm.

Once all 31 days had a prompt attached to them, I could proceed to the next step of researching and creating thumbnails.

RESEARCH AND THUMBNAILS

For each prompt, I have looked up an image that would be most representative or help me to better understand how the object works. After that, I would apply my own approach and then fully render it. Some artworks have a more minimalist approach and others have a more complex environment depending on what worked best for each prompt. In some cases it was to bring more context, in others to simply highlight the object that could stand on its own.

The format for each artwork was kept the same to 1:1, with the intention to have them neatly as a set next to each other.

FINAL ARTWORKS AND LEARNINGS

I am more than happy that I managed to get at the end of the challenge and complete all 31 artworks. Looking back at the artworks, I am delighted with the end result. As most artists, I am more pleased with some final artworks than others, however along this journey I have learned a lot. Not only did my technical skills improve, I have also further learned how to approach an artwork and what can be improved in the workflow and execution. Hope you enjoy having a look at the final artworks below!
